Stop FTP Service

Hi guys,
how do I stop the FTP service, I have tried

/etc/init.d/proftpd stop
and
/etc/init.d/psa-proftpd stop

but neither worked.
I am using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS x64 and Plesk 10.0.1.

In file /etc/xinetd.d/ftp_psa change

disable = no

to

disable = yes

and restart xinetd sevice.

How would I do this through SSH please, I have never edited a file through SSH. Or can I download the file edit it and upload it again without breaking anything?

Login to server via ssh and edit file with vi editor, for example.

I need to start the proftp service again so I have change the above back but it's not running after a restart of xinetd.
How do I start it again.
This is urgent as I need to set up the ftp for a developer.

Do you have following content of /etc/xinetd.d/ftp_psa ?

service ftp
{
disable = no
socket_type = stream
protocol = tcp
wait = no
user = root
instances = UNLIMITED
server = /usr/sbin/in.proftpd
server_args = -c /etc/proftpd.conf
}

Did you check

# lsof -i tcp:21

after

# /etc/init.d/xinetd restart

Sorted - when I had disabled it I had used PPP File Manager to edit the file so I had to run dos2unix on the psa_ftp file and restart xinetd and it was fine.

All together "D'OH"

To turn off (i.e. disable) ftp in Plesk, I just did:

chkconfig ftp_psa off

That made the above change in the config file and restarted xinetd for me, without having to do either manually.

Is there a reason why the chkconfig method is a bad idea?

So is there a new way to do this now?

ftp_psa: on

[root@ppu12-5 ~]# chkconfig ftp_psa off

[root@ppu12-5 ~]# chkconfig --list | grep ftp_psa
