Updating to latest version of installed software

We have installed mysql 3.x and php4. Can i update to the latest version of that software (mySQL 4 and PHP5)

If it possible: are the updates system-wide or can i update per user?

Installing new versions of PHP and Mysql

I've done the same using the following articles:

After the update to the newest PHP-version you need to set php to run as asapi module. I even succeeded in using IMP with PHP 5. You need to install a couple of PEAR classes to make it work.
