windows or redhat for plesk?

Hi

I am thinking of putting another plesk server online and when I started with plesk the windows version was not available. My question is this, is the windows version a "better" choice over redhat?

I ask this as every upgrade of plesk has been with some risk, so I have been paying to have it done for peace of mind. I know this is the linux section, I am hoping some of you have both and can render a good recommendation.

Thanks

Chuck

I dont think windows is any more safe or secure than its linux counter part. My concern is the plesk portion. In the last 10 years or so I have run both linux and windows, I have not had any major complaints for either os on their own, apply the os updates in a timely manner and for the most part things are ok.

I am so reluctant to hit the updater in plesk for fear that some function will not work after it completes. I am hoping that the windows version is more reliable in the updating area.

I do like what plesk does and I think they have made many improvments since I started with version 7 so I dont want to take on a new CP.

As far as base/updates channels go from redhat/fedora/centos, when the first RPM based version of PSA was being designed the intent was always to work with, rather than against, their updates.

The psa package itself is the only one that has real risks of causing a major outage. Specifically a major update will usually involve changes to the mysql psa database, and because of this there is a running 7 day backup contained in /var/lib/psa. So a worst-case failed upgrade of the psa package usually involves both backing out the rpm, and restoring the database. Failed upgrades of other packages, like qmail, courier, etc only involve reinstalling the rpm itself.

Well after reading the "sticky" for the win version, I may rethink
staying put and just use redhat 4 es and plesk 8.1

I will have to see if I am successful installing the atomic sec linux before I put the server online. Could never get it installed..

Any network card recomendations for dell servers to use instead of
the broadcom?

Chuck

I'd avoid the NVIDIA (tg3) and Broadcom/Cisco (there are a lot of them) cards unless you're on a newer distribution like FC5 or CentOS5/RHEL5.

Otherwise you're usally in really good shape with network cards. Just stay awy from anything really really new unless you can test it out first.
