Issue AlmaLinux 9.8: yum update blocked by Plesk PHP 8.4/8.5 GD dependencies on libavif.so.15?

Hi everyone,

Running yum update today on a server with AlmaLinux 9.8 and Plesk Obsidian 18 fails with the following dependency conflicts:

Problem 1: package plesk-php84-gd-8.4.26-0redhat.9.260925.1235.x86_64 from @System requires libavif.so.15()(64bit), but none of the providers can be installed

- cannot install the best update candidate for package plesk-php85-gd-8.5.11-0redhat.9.260925.1431.x86_64
(try to add '--allowerasing' to command line to replace conflicting packages or '--skip-broken' to skip uninstallable packages or '--nobest' to use not only best candidate packages)

Is this a known compatibility issue between the Plesk PHP packages and the latest EPEL updates?

Good morning,

we experienced the same issues today on our AlmaLinux 9.8 servers. All PHP interpreters starting with version 8.x are affected.

As a temporary workaround, we uninstalled the currently active PHP 8.3 versions so that we could perform a kernel update. Roundcube was removed as part of the process as well. Afterwards, we were able to update the kernel successfully, but we are now unable to reinstall either the PHP interpreters or Roundcube due to the conflict.

The issue has been present since this morning. Everything was working normally yesterday.

Thank you for the report. I can confirm the issue. EPEL has recently updated libavif and svt-av1-libs to new major versions with incompatible library versions, and the Plesk PHP GD packages on EL9 still depend on the old ones. This isn't specific to Plesk: other vendors' PHP builds that link against EPEL's libavif are affected too. The issue has been passed to the development team with high priority.

Until the fix is released, you can update the rest of the system by excluding these two packages:

dnf update --exclude=libavif --exclude=svt-av1-libs

or lock them permanently:

dnf versionlock add libavif svt-av1-libs

Please do not use --allowerasing, because it will remove the Plesk PHP GD packages.
