apache not restarting gracefully after rebuild

Hi All!

I had too many open files on my system so rebuilt rpms for apache, php-4.3.11 & the rest on CentOS3. (centos 3.8)

Everything seems to work until I install Zend 3.0.0 extensions. Once they are in place, then "service apache graceful" no longer works. The httpd processes do not die off, there are a few processes that refuse to die naturally until I force it by hand.

Any ideas? Maybe I'm crazy and it doesn't have anything to do with Zend. Would appreciate any input.
