It led to This :

/usr/local/psa/bin/admin --show-password

Gives me the password that I currently use to login to the panel, which works fine.

How do I convert that to the hash that needs to be in that shadow file?

Hi jmackenz,

the answer to your question is given at "Unable to log in to Plesk: saved admin password is incorrect ( Plesk Knowledge-Base article 112492 )" :

4. Update the password for Plesk using the ch_admin_passwd utility:

# /usr/local/psa/bin/admin --show-password
password
# export PSA_PASSWORD=password
# /usr/local/psa/admin/bin/ch_admin_passwd

The "ch-admin_passwd" - utility stores as well the encrypted password at "/etc/psa/.psa.shadow".

[root@server1 ~]# /usr/local/psa/bin/admin --show-password
displayedpass
[root@server1 ~]# export PSA_PASSWORD=displayedpass
[root@server1 ~]# /usr/local/psa/admin/bin/ch_admin_passwd
[root@server1 ~]# mysql -u admin psa
ERROR 1045 (28000): Access denied for user 'admin'@'localhost' (using password: YES)
[root@server1 ~]# MYSQL_PWD=`cat /etc/psa/.psa.shadow` mysql -u admin mysql
ERROR 1045 (28000): Access denied for user 'admin'@'localhost' (using password: YES)

what am I doing wrong?

Also attempted :

[root@server1 ~]# /usr/local/psa/bin/init_conf -u -passwd NEWPASS

SUCCESS: Completed updating administrator's information.
[root@server1 ~]# MYSQL_PWD=`cat /etc/psa/.psa.shadow` mysql -u admin mysql
ERROR 1045 (28000): Access denied for user 'admin'@'localhost' (using password: YES)
[root@server1 ~]# /usr/local/psa/bin/admin --show-password
NEWPASS
[root@server1 ~]# export PSA_PASSWORD=NEWPASS
[root@server1 ~]# /usr/local/psa/admin/bin/ch_admin_passwd
[root@server1 ~]# MYSQL_PWD=`cat /etc/psa/.psa.shadow` mysql -u admin mysql
ERROR 1045 (28000): Access denied for user 'admin'@'localhost' (using password: YES)

Hi jmackenz,

instead of using "mysql -u admin psa", pls. use

plesk db DATABASE_NAME

or

mysql -uadmin -p`cat /etc/psa/.psa.shadow` DATABASE_NAME

Edit:

... and pls. consider to follow further suggestions from the KB - article!

Note: If you are unable to connect, enable skip-grant-tables in the /etc/my.cnf file, restart MySQL, then update the admin password:

[mysqld]
skip-grant-tables

# /etc/init.d/mysqld restart
# mysql -uadmin
mysql> UPDATE mysql.user SET Password=PASSWORD('$AES***') WHERE User='admin';

Do not forget to remove skip-grant-tables after that and restart MySQL.

I apologize if I'm being a little slow this morning. I'm being torn in a multitude of different directions.

When you say Database_Name , I'm assuming that should be psa , correct ?
This MariaDB , is this a new replacement for MySQL in 12.5?

Code:
Note: If you are unable to connect, enable skip-grant-tables in the /etc/my.cnf file, restart MySQL, then update the admin password:

[mysqld]
skip-grant-tables

# /etc/init.d/mysqld restart
# mysql -uadmin
mysql> UPDATE mysql.user SET Password=PASSWORD('$AES***') WHERE User='admin';

Do not forget to remove skip-grant-tables after that and restart MySQL.

In this example where it states PASSWORD I assume that should be the newpass used above? or is it literally PASSWORD.

Where It Says $AES*** is that a literal *** or am I supposed to replace it with something?

[root@server1 ~]# mysql -uadmin
ERROR 1045 (28000): Access denied for user 'admin'@'localhost' (using password: YES)

[root@server1 ~]# mysql -uadmin -p`cat /etc/psa/.psa.shadow` psa

MariaDB [psa]>

Hi jmackenz,

in your quote, you now already connected successfully to your PSA - database - pls. have another closer look :
MariaDB [psa]>

Now that you already know, that the password is correctly stored in the shadow - file, pls. continue with your command:
[root@server1 ~]# MYSQL_PWD=`cat /etc/psa/.psa.shadow` mysql -u admin mysql
I marked in RED, what you should change, when I stated:
instead of using "mysql -u admin psa", pls. use

plesk db DATABASE_NAME
or

mysql -uadmin -p`cat /etc/psa/.psa.shadow` DATABASE_NAME

Please REPLACE "DATABASE_NAME" with the desired database, in the just quoted command, that you used, it would be:

MYSQL_PWD=`cat /etc/psa/.psa.shadow` mysql -uadmin -p`cat /etc/psa/.psa.shadow` mysql

... but if you would like to connect to your PSA - database over the command line, you certainly would use:

mysql -uadmin -p`cat /etc/psa/.psa.shadow` psa

or

plesk db psa

In this example where it states PASSWORD I assume that should be the newpass used above? or is it literally PASSWORD.

Where It Says $AES*** is that a literal *** or am I supposed to replace it with something?

Pls. note the following things and try to use the commands to fully understand, what the commands are for:

The following command displays the admin password:

/usr/local/psa/bin/admin --show-password
The following command displays the ENCRYPTED admin password:

cat /etc/psa/.psa.shadow`
=> As you can see, the first command displays the admin password, without encryption and the second command displays the encrypted admin password, starting with "$AES".

Edit: In addition, pls. DON'T forget the further steps from KB - article 116916 , when you successfully connected to your mysql - database :

  • Check admin privileges:

    mysql> SHOW GRANTS FOR 'admin'@'localhost'\G

  • Grant all privileges to admin if required:

    GRANT ALL ON *.* TO 'admin'@'localhost' WITH GRANT OPTION;
    FLUSH PRIVILEGES;

I am thinking that I misunderstood you.

I took it before that for Password=PASSWORD('AESContent)

That PASSWORD should be replaced with output of plain text password request and that AES content should be content of psa.shadow.

Hi jmackenz,

pls. change ONLY the "('$AEScontent')" - part and replace it with the content from "cat /etc/psa/.psa.shadow`".

=> UPDATE mysql.user SET Password=PASSWORD('YOUR_VERY_OWN_ENCRYPTED_PASSWORD_FOR_ADMIN-USER_ON_YOUR_SYSTEM') WHERE User='admin';

Thanks for the clarification.

Hi jmackenz,

now pls. continue with the update/upgrade procedure again:

Pls. restart your auto-update process again, as for example over the command line:

/usr/local/psa/admin/sbin/autoinstaller --select-release-current --upgrade-installed-components --reinstall-patch --install-component base

[root@server1 ~]# /usr/local/psa/admin/sbin/autoinstaller --select-release-current --upgrade-installed-components --reinstall-patch --install-component base

ERROR: You specified wrong combination of options.
The options install-component and upgrade-installed-components cannot be used together.
Refer to installer's help page for details (run Plesk Installer with --help option).

Running Just

/usr/local/psa/admin/sbin/autoinstaller --select-release-current --upgrade-installed-components --reinstall-patch

Brings me back to :

Code:
Trying to start service mariadb... active
done
Trying to establish test connection... ERROR 1045 (28000): Access denied for user 'admin'@'localhost' (using password: YES)
ERROR 1045 (28000): Access denied for user 'admin'@'localhost' (using password: YES)

To clarify, in the mariadb prompt I put

Code:
UPDATE mysql.user SET Password=PASSWORD('12345') WHERE User='admin'

here 12345 is the output of psa.shadow ,

just wanted to make sure that the enclosing ' should remain
