My backup is saying successful, however it is only backing up apache:apache files and nothing else (ie: files uploaded by the ftp account). Also, when I attempt to download the backup from plesk, it responds with a 404 error even though it is there and is uploading to the remote server.
Please help!

If I get it right, then having a file with apache:apache 0600 (typical session file) will produce message:
For security reason backup is performed on behalf of subscription system user.
And this will lead to a fail:
Failed to pack files
My workaround for this is to edit /usr/local/psa/PMM/agents/shared/Storage/TarBundle.pm and exclude the directories/files, which make trouble. In the sub commandLine anywhere after my $cmd add line like:
$cmd .= " --exclude=/var/www/vhosts/yourdomain/httpdocs/tmp/session";
The backup will pass thru.
This is a solution for files, that do not need to be backup. But you may have images uploaded by users and then this is is clear bug, which must be fixed by Parallels.

The problem is that files in this directory must be blocked for "group" and "world" in apache but must be there for support or root cron's like mysqldumper.
This problems occur since update from plesk 11.0.x to 12, before the backup works fine!
Please find a solution for that.

they have only to change der Backup user or right to root or admin and no problem will occur....

I know, this is old, but the issue still affects me. All files in folders created by www-data and chmod 770 or below won't be included in the backup - with NO error message! The log just states a tar error. /bin/tar: -: Cannot write: Broken pipe.
Please FIX it or provide a possibility to perform backup as root.

Done that. The problem was with plesk support for weeks before we we gave up and closed the ticket without anything being fixed. Every night I still get backup errors because it can't backup the cache files on a forum. The problem is I don't need these files backup up but plesk provides no way to exclude them.

It's not just excluding cache files it should be to exclude any files/directories of my choosing.
