Can I run a Mail Server independent of Plesk?

Can I turn off the mailserver in plesk 8.1 and run hmail on the same server independently? My problem is I want to run hmail server 5 and plesk but since they are not compatible my automatic backups in plesk are not working. Even if I turn off the backing up of mail boxes it still crashes the backup with a "cannot find domain" error and the logs show a mail related call. I don't give my clients control panel access (they don't need it) and I don't mind not being able to setup email addresses in plesk as I take care of that through the hmail control panel anyway.

I don't have a test server so I thought I'd ask if anyone else does this before attempting a late night test. If so, did you have to do anything special to get it to work...
