Can't connect to my box through FTP

Hey everyone.
So for some reason ftp decided to stop working.
I've checked my firewall and port 21 is being forwarded.
I've checked to see if any process is listening on port 21 and xinetd is.

When i try to telnet my box from a remote location on port 21 i get connection failed but on the local box through ssh theres no problem.
From what i can see this is a firewall issue but port 21 IS being forwarded so i have no clue where to look.
SFTP works no problem.

What should i look at next?

Forwarded to what? Have you tried just to disable firewall rule for port 21?

Do you mean to say that, after you login to the host using SSH, you can FTP to localhost?

What should i look at next?

Try temporarily disabling iptables...

# /etc/init.d/iptables stop

and re-test.
