Control Panel service won't start

We are running 7.6.1 and suddenly the control panel service won't start. All the other plesk stuff is working fine but not the control panel. No sensible error message: he PleskControlPanel service terminated with service-specific error 1 (0x1).

Anybody any ideas?

Just for info ... found that for some reason the permissions on %plesk% had changed for psadm (?) ... goodness knows why.
