if I setup a catchall only for a domain so that there is no email address do I still need to tick the mailbox to make the catchall active?
 
Yes, in the case you want to keep catched emails in a mailbox ;)

Otherwise you would lose them (or get them bounced into server postmaster mailbox), I guess.
