FTP Error - 501 PASSV

I am getting a 501 PASSV error message when I try to connect to any of the sites hosted on my server. What sort of things cause this error and has anyone else encountered and fixed it?
 
You should toggle passive mode in your ftp client. This is generally due to a firewall.
