FTP to an IP address

We have a client whose existing website is hosted elseware but whose new site will be hosted with us. We are doing some work (prior to the move)which requires the use of a DreamWeaver Extention. This extention requires the set up of an ftp path. there are two fileds to be filled in, "FTP host" and "Host directory" How do we path an IP address? We have tried ftp://68.178.xxx.xxx for the "FTP host" and /domainname.com/httpdocs for the "host directory" and just the ip address with the host directory blank and that doesn't work either. Any ideas?

Normally we would use ftp://domainname.com/ and the host directory would be httpdocs/
