getimagesize() function doesn't work on local images

I have some phpbb3 forums setup and they were running fine. Then all of a sudden, the getimagesize() function no longer works for images stored locally on my server (any domain on the server) but it works fine for any images from other servers/websites.

I believe I restarted the VPS the day that it stopped working.

Does anyone know what might have casued this issue and a way to fix it?

I dont see how rebooting alone could stop one php function from working - there must have been some other piece to this
