IMAP new messages display as read / seen

IMAP on Plesk 10.4.4

new messages (unread) are initially marked as unread, but then the next time mail checks the server, it marks them as read - even though they haven't been read. My guess is this has to do with the permanentflags? Does anyone know a fix for this?
