What are they?

sounds like the MX record for that .ca domain name is pointing to your server yet your machine doesn't have mail setup for it. When you add a domain to plesk, it adds it to the /var/qmail/control/rcpthosts file and /var/qmail/control/virtualdomains
so that the server knows what to do when email is to be sent to that domain.

Note that the domain is in form of XXX.xxxxx.ca - it's actually a tertiary domain - so shouldn't it use the primary domain's xxxx.ca MX record?

even if it does use the primary domain's MX record .. the mail server wil still not recognize the domain until XX.xxx.ca has been added to the controls file. You'll have to login to plesk and add XX.xxx.ca as a new domain and setup mail for it.
