Some customers do (maybe 2 out of 100), but they then save the backups into their own webspace. Very bad for us, because the general server backup (which should mainly be there for disaster recovery) has to save the customer's original files plus their own backups, too. It makes disk space consumption even larger.
But the major number of customers (98 out of 100) do not configure their own backup, because they are
- lazy
- don't know how to do it (very major reason)
- don't want to use their web space for it, to save money
- don't want to buy extra external space for it, to save money
- are not aware that backups are important
With the very few customers that manage their own backups we frequently run into problems, because they configure their backup rotation to very long retention times. These cause overuse of web space, which forces us again to create support cases, to contact the customers individually and ask them to reduce their disk space usage.
Customers expect the provider to do the backups, and very unfortunately they expect restores free of charge. We even had customers who were expecting free restores AFTER their contract expired, because they then wanted to migrate their data to some other provider and realized they did not back it up ... I don't think it will be possible to convince customers that doing their backup is something that they have to learn and do by themselves.
