smtp auth and mac mail

I have an existing email server with Plesk. Up to this point we have only done pop3 login but I am wanting to put in place the smtp auth. So in Plesk I checked SMTP under relay options leaving the pop3 checked for now. Using mac mail I went to accounts and edited my pop3 account Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP). Under advanced I Use default ports (obviously not blocked since it worked to this point) and changed Authentication to Password and then added username (full email address) and my password. Saved all that and in the Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) it shows that server offline and I am not able to send emails out.

Any pointer as to what is wrong?

When pop-before-relay (pop3 locking) is enabled, Mac Mail (and outlook 2007) cannot authenticate.

If you untick the pop locking all should be fine.

For some reason I didn't get notified of the reply above. So is there a work around for this? We have a lot of email accounts to migrate over to smtp auth so really need to leave both turned on for some period of time to complete that migration.
