trouble setting mail password- "The password is incorrect"

Having trouble changing mail passwords via Plesk CP. I receive the following error: "The password is incorrect, use at least 5 characters. The password should not contain mail name as its part. Only Latin characters no dictionary words (optional).

The server is set to check for dictionary words in the password. I'm using short names for email user accounts and I've seen this problem reported before when using short email names (something about user names and passwords matching or same name on several domains).

In the past the work around I've employed is to change the mail name to something else, then create an alias to match what the user prefers. In this case, the problem mail name is "mail". When I couldn't change the password, I tried renaming the account to mail24, mail99, mail14, etc. but am still receiving the same error message above.

If I go to server > mail and clear the option to "Check the passwords for mailboxes in the dictionary" and then click ok, I receive, "Unable to allow the use of short mail names for POP3/IMAP accounts. There are mail names matching the encrypted passwords."

Two Questions:
1. Can someone tell me how to fix this or create a work around.
2. I have quite a few domains with even more mail accounts and up to now I have been using short mail names. If I now select the option to use full mail names, what will that do to my existing installed base?

Thanks in advance for any help.

I have the same problem. How do I fix this? I Can't change the setting now and I really need to :(

Allready fixed it.

Change the value op the field 'allow_short_pop3_names' in MySQL table misc in database PSA to 'enabled' and restart plesk. That did the trick for me.

Although I am still very curious what users share an encrypted password or something.
