what is a normal ftp connection time

Ive finally managed to get my ftp client to work (ie my username and password), but it never loads completely due to the time it takes to list the root directory. I always get the error

LISTING DIRECTORY FAILED

NO TRANSFER TIMEOUT (300 SECONDS): CLOSING CONTROL CONNECTION

Try setting your FTP client to use 'Passive' mode.

I tried that, it also logs on then times out but with a different error message... should I try other ports other than 21 and should I set a path like "/httpdocs" or something?
