  • Support for BIND DNS has been removed from Plesk for Windows due to security and maintenance risks.
If a Plesk for Windows server is still using BIND, the upgrade to Plesk Obsidian 18.0.70 will be unavailable until the administrator switches the DNS server to Microsoft DNS.

All Sites Down after modifying PLESK through Add/remove programs

All our sites are Down after modifying PLESK through Add/remove programs. It appears that PLESK switched OFF our dns service, we have to Remote login and then use PLESK control panel under component management to switch the server back to using BIND. This took us about 20 minutes to track down and during that time we got over 500 Phone calls that all sites on the server were down. I mean PLEASE FIX THIS BUG!

Remeber that when you login to your plesk control panel to fix this problem you need to use your server's IP instead of the hostname since DNS is down.

All I wanted to do was add php5 support so i opened add/remove programs, selected PLESK and then choose the modify option, I scrolled down to Scripting enigines and then to php5 Clicked on the "Will be installed on the server" option and then clicked OK. This should have kept my original configuration the same and simply added php5 to the server, but in doing so the BIND DNS server was turned OFF. A very unwanted result which caused us much trouble to track down and correct.

so how did you resolve the bind issue?

removing bind and then add again will work?

No you don't have to re-install it, you just have to login to plesk and choose it from the component management section.

when I enable via component management of plesk, bind does not start and seems red

moise, seems it's other issue.
could you please find error messages from bind in event viewer?

I could not take it anymore on bind sorry and I have changed it to Microsoft name server. Now web sites are working.

Flashback: Meanwhile I had to try 3 times to get the Microsoft name server work, because it was stopping while adding dns forwarders at the web site name baginngin "M", after a cold drink and a cigarette I have found out that Plesk had "Mewebadmin" web site and the Microsoft name server did not like it.
So I have removed the mewebadmmin and mesomething domains from plesk, choosen Microsoft name server from plesk components and the plesk added all domains to the forwarders list at Microsoft name server. Now it seems OK.

Traged1, unfortunatly we cannot reproduce it as is but anyway it is not good turn off dns when php5 was added. we will investigate and improve this scenario in the next update or version.

Thanks, I do not run MS DNS servers only BIND since my background is from LINUX/Unix.

Same problem

Hello I am running Plesk 8.1 with Windows 2003 Web.

Yesterday i installed through ad/remove programms the SpamAssassin module. It took some time but it works.
After a few minutes we got several phonecalls from clients that their websites were down.

We had the samen problemm we had to login through the ControlPanel with an ip-address and go to server->Components Management
There the DNS server was switched off, we had to switch is on again to solve the problem.

Is this a bug? If so it should be solved asap.

Kind regards

Frank van Dijk

fvdijk, thank you for your report. seems it's the bug and we will fix it asap.
unfortunatly we cannot reproduce it in our lab. could you please to let us know how many domains on your server?

This happened to us on two plesk windows servers, first one had 300 domains, the second had 100 domains. It may only happen when you are using the BIND DNS server? not sure have you guys tried reproducing that using the BIND server only and not MS DNS?

I am on this moment running 28 domains and about 100 alias domains on this server.

It is a clean Windows 2003 Web Edition Service Pack 1 with Plesk 8.1, DrWeb and SpamAssassin.
I run Serv-U 6.1 as FTP Server
It is running on a P4-3.0 Ghz machine with 1 Gb RAM

The server has been upgraded from 7.5.4 tot 7.6.1 to 8.1 (last week)

Kind regards,

Frank van Dijk
