Had a bit of a problem with sessions earlier today, for some bizzare reason webmail would begin to display a blank screen and the gallery script started throwing error :

Fatal error: session_start(): Failed to initialize storage module: user (path: /tmp)

So I rolled back to PHP release that came with centos 3.4. Not too happy about it, but could not figure out any other way to fix (or even patch) this...

seems to work for now. Any ideas?

ART PHP v4.3.11-8 is avilable too, perhaps this will fix it?

Also, you may want to edit your /etc/php.ini

Does /tmp exist? Perhaps try changing session mode?

seems to have gone away with upgrades. no other suggestion from me.
