Question Cannot restore backup after license change

Server operating system version
Ubuntu 22.04.5 LTS
Plesk version and microupdate number
Plesk Obsidian 18.0.76.5
Hi all!

I have a Problem restoring my Plesk Backup. I use a VPS at Strato Germany. After logging in to my Servers Plesk Panel i got a message, that my License has expires and i have to do an automatic License change. The change successfully ended and after installing the new License i could login to Plesk. But after i tried to restore the Backup File i got a message, that the Reseller data could not be restored due to the new License. I do not know anymore how i configured my Plesk at the beginning - it was about 5-10 years ago. I also do not know, what kind of License was installed before the Change. The new License is a Plesk 12 VPS Web Admin.
Is there a way to restore the Data? I have full access to the old Server, and i have the Plesk Backups named backup_user-data_$DATE.tzst files

Thx in advance

If you still have access to the old server and you're trying to restore to a new server, I would recommend using the plesk migrator to migrate it from the old server to new.

In either case, if your old server's license has support for adding resellers and you have reseller accounts and you're trying to restore a backup to a server that is licensed for Web Admin then that's the reason, as Web Admin license does not support reseller accounts.

A workaround could be going to the domain you're trying to restore from and back up just that then restoring.

Another alternative would be to restore only the data/subscription/domain and not the user account. This does mean you would need to manually create the user account then associate the domain to the new user account.

The final alternative is, if you're planning on decomming the old server anyways and thinking about moving that license over to the new one, is to request a temporary web host edition license so you can do the migration/restore from the backup, once done you can then utilize the old license onto the new server.

The final final alternative is to convert the reseller accounts on the old server to normal user user accounts, create a new backup, then restore on the new server (almost forgot about this one, still too early in the morning for me).

@snIP3r

The error message

that the Reseller data could not be restored due to the new License.

is highly indicative of the fact that your old license was Web Host, whereas your new license is Web Admin.

One could go through all kinds of fuzz and manual steps, but I would recommend to

1 - request a trial Web Host license for migration,

2 - restore the backup : this in order to test whether you are actually able to restore the backup,

3 - if able to restore the backup properly, then purchase your own paid-for Web Host license and install that on the VPS

and please note that step 3 (adding a Web Host license to a VPS) is a bit of an overkill on any VPS, but it will provide certainty that you maintain backup data.

Afterwards, you can always convert resellers and install the Web Admin license.

To be honest, all of the above is also a bit of fuzz, but you are on the verge of losing backup data by having the wrong Plesk license.

Stated differently, one should first attempt - at all costs - to restore the backup data without any flaws or issues.

I hope the above helps a bit!

Kind regards....
