E-mail Password from Client Reader Fails

I installed 8.1 on SuSE SLES (64).
I can access webmail, but Windows E-mail Readers (Eudora/Thunderbird) can't access mail - password failure.
I don't believe it's a firewall issue. I think I must be missing something on the new install.

Suggestions welcome...
