extracting data from password protected backup files

With reference to the methods described in this kb article:

and, perhaps related to:

https://talk.plesk.com/threads/plesk-12-x-x-backup-manager-encryption-security-issue.334691/

How would one go about manually extracting data from a password protected (plesk 12.0.18) full system backup? Assuming it's a tarball - would a password be introduced, somehow, as you untar the archive?

UPDATE (04 Oct 2015):

1. I have downloaded and successfully extracted data from a plesk password-protected full-backup tarball using an archive manager. I have yet to test a restore to plesk from the same.

2. I suspect the plesk password is a plesk validation it uses during the backup restoration process, though it seems there are ways around plesk password validation, as well (see "Uploading backup files without a valid signature"):

Thanks for any claification.
