• The BIND DNS server has already been deprecated and removed from Plesk for Windows.
    If a Plesk for Windows server is still using BIND, the upgrade to Plesk Obsidian 18.0.70 will be unavailable until the administrator switches the DNS server to Microsoft DNS. We strongly recommend transitioning to Microsoft DNS within the next 6 weeks, before the Plesk 18.0.70 release.
  • The Horde component is removed from Plesk Installer. We recommend switching to another webmail software supported in Plesk.

This is on Mac OS X 10.4.5 and a new install of plesk.

Silly question: I am on the same latest version of Mac OS X ...as my private machine, but also to do customer service (no hacking, great advantage). Anyway, the question is -- are you using a Mac as an actual server or is this a kind of home version for the fun of it? I'd like to hear more about Mac + Plesk .... as I am an old Mac geek, and an old Plesk geek, but never used both together ...also wasn't possible, before, I think. Any explanations would be greatly appreciated.

John

I'm sure most people wouldnt recommend it but I'm going to be running Plesk as my actual server for my personal site on my Macintosh that I use for my main computer.

Okay. So, you have that Mac at home with a DSL or cable connection? And you basically get Plesk free because one domain one email is part of their license-free version, yes? I am really just interested in possibly doing the same ..... how much space is Plesk 8 supposed to take from your HDD ... and, another question, if its your home Mac, how do you do this with the nameservers and IP ?? Am really interested to try this out.

John

I have verizon FIOS (Fiber Optic) Internet service residential right now but there coming to install business class on the 5th of April. So ill have 5 static IP's. I'm thinking of using the free version to test out my blog and see how it runs then once I do that buy a license and run my other sites on it.

Thanks for your fast replies.
How much is such a business connection with 5 IPs (do not name the company name here, might be misunderstood as advertisement). And what kind of connection speed and bandwidth do you get for that?? Asking because, BASICALLY, you could indeed run your server from home ... I am just wondering what the difference in speed and power and cost is to having them in a data center (I have my own rack).

John

15 Down 2 Up for 100 a month.

You can get 5 up 5 down and then 30 down 5 up also not sure about pricing I think 30 / 5 is about 300.

>> 15 Down 2 Up for 100 a month.

Interesting. That's enough for a professional website ... or many sites.
Might mean that within the next couple of years the hosting industry goes down the drain if one out of 10 people with such home server will host his and friends' sites. Given that you'd pay around $50 for a standard DSL connection this is another $50 for the server functionality -- *without* the license fees (for Plesk). .... Seems to me as if ths could be a runner for small to medium businesses who want to make sure they don't loose any data (as they have easy ways to backup their data at home.

Anyway, it be great if you could post your install and other Mac experiences here ...I'll probably try in a week, no time now.

THANKS again!

John

I'd love to post about it but it seems the Plesk installer for Mac OS is funked and doesn't work.

I am having the same problem. It would be great if somebody could give us some clue as to what is going wrong. The install instructions to not seem to have been written with any reference to OSX and the install simply does not work.

I edited the host file and made it so it was 127.0.0.0 PowerMac.local localhost

PowerMac.local would be what ever your macintoshes host name is set to in the network prefrences.

QUOTE from installer:
-----------
psa_v8.0.0_build80060329.13_os_MacOS_10.4w_powerpc.sh: This script must be run as root
Log in as root then run this script again.
-----------

How the heck does one "log in as root" on a Mac?
I am using the Mac "Terminal" program.

/////////////// EDIT //////////
seems to be this:
sudo -u root ./psa_installer_v3.0.1_build060327.19_os_MacOS_10.4w_ppc

Please correct if there is a better way.
Info here:
http://developer.apple.com/qa/qa2001/qa1013.html

/////////// EDIT -2- ////////////

The problem is most certainly the HOSTNAME. I followed your advise above .... but it is still not working. My /etc/hosts looks like this .... what could be wrong?

127.0.0.1 PowerMac.local localhost
255.255.255.255 broadcasthost
::1 localhost

Also, when I type the command "hostname" I get this: 172.16.xx.xx ...This is NOT the IP I am at. Can't find owner of that IP. Any ideas?

John

Anyone knows about the HOSTNAME problem described in my last post .... that's the key why the entire install fails, I think.

John

PowerMac.local should be what evers listed in your Networking settings in Sys Prefrences is that what you have it set to? Mine is PowerMac yours could be like Name's PowerMac.local or something.

As for the root you have to enable the root access because its disabled by default do a google search for enabling root access on Mac OS X.

Hi Ricky:

Apple --> System Preferences --> Network

This is where all the network connection settings are. I cannot find any place where something like a hostname (or any name) would be set.

////////// EDIT ///////////////////

I did successfully install Plesk 8 !
There was no HOSTNAME setting in "Networks" -- as described above. I found that I had to edit it via Mac Terminal application in this file:
/etc/hostconfig
(to be sure, it is also in /etc/hosts)
See this info: http://www.geektimes.com/macintosh/os/x/10_0/core/hostname.html

..............
Congratulations!
Plesk has been successfully installed on your server.
To complete the system configuration, please proceed to URL:
https://PowerMac.local:8443/ or
https://127.0.0.1:8443/
Use the login name 'admin' and password 'setup'.
...............

Okay, fine, all seems to work fine.
No idea what to do with it, since I don't have a dedicated IP at home .... but interesting in any case.

John

My mistake I meant under sharing in prefrences. But glad you got it to work anyways.

Under "Sharing" I have:
--------------
Computer Name: Johns-Computer.local
Other computers on your local subnet can access your computer at Johns-Computer.local
--------------

NOTE that the name I set (see my last post) was a different name. I can still access Plesk v.8 just fine ... but probably if indeed you are on a dedicated IP or otherwise in the same local network, these names should be identical.
