• The BIND DNS server has already been deprecated and removed from Plesk for Windows.
If a Plesk for Windows server is still using BIND, the upgrade to Plesk Obsidian 18.0.70 will be unavailable until the administrator switches the DNS server to Microsoft DNS. We strongly recommend transitioning to Microsoft DNS within the next 6 weeks, before the Plesk 18.0.70 release.
  • The Horde component is removed from Plesk Installer. We recommend switching to another webmail software supported in Plesk.

How to allow creation of subdomains of a specific domain?

New Pleskian
Hi all,

I am trying to set up a Plesk web hosting environment under Linux. I only want to have two service plans: one where users are free to create and use their own domain, and one where users can only create a subdomain of a particular domain (that is, they can have joe.mydomain.com but not theirdomain.com).

I tried to achieve this with Plesk but I have no idea how to do this. I tried allowing 1 subdomain for these users, and then allowing them to create subdomains in other people's domains, but then Joe can create joe.bobsdomain.com which is not what I want either.

Any ideas very appreciated!

Thanks,
- Tim

Plesk service plans haven't possibility for restrictions of creating domain names.

Clarification...

Thank you for this statement. However, as I am currently evaluating to migrate our server to plesk 11 I would like to doublecheck, that I understood you correctly.

I understood, that it is not possible to restrict users(=my customers, but not necessarily trusted users) from creating subdomains in other users domains?

This sounds for me like a severe security issue with the outcome that basically only highly trusted people may receive the create subdomain priviledge?

Thank you...

Create every domain as new subscription. What will this do? You can give access only to users who should have access to this domain/subscription and that's how you can restrict them to only do something within that subscription you assign them (and they won't even see other subscription/subdomains).

You can also restrict this users to certain permission - not only you can give them permission to only access to certain subscriptions, you can also assign them permission - "Accountant", "Application User", "Webmaster", "Owner" - make sure you test/check what permissions they have.

ALSO this 4 roles are predefined, you can make custom user role and give them permissions which ever you want, depending on how you want to restrict this users.

That is managed by "Do not let users create DNS subzones in other users' DNS superzones" option in Server Settings. If enabled, a user cannot create sub.anotheruser.com
