mail.app won't send mail!

Plesk 7.5.3 having no problems with Thunderbird clients or Horde on any client OS. But when I try to send mail using OSX Mail.app it won't go.

I've tried playing around with changing authentication methods at the mail.app client side but with no success.

The curious thing is that very very occasionally a mail will get out...

Apple support have sat on this support request for 3 months with no action.

Does anybody have any clues as to how to get mail.app to work with Plesk?

I had the same issues.. until we figured out that Mail was defaulting to port 587 for sending email. Change it to 465 and you should be fine.

To do so:
open Mail preferences
choose the account you want to adjust
click on server settings
change the port from 587 to 465
close and save as needed.
send a test message..

No changing port addresses does not solve this. I've tried everything including using the same one's used by Thunderbird (25).

It looks more like a user authentication problem in mail.app with Plesk qmail configurations.

Can you tell us more about the configuration?

Which Version of OS X? Which version of Mail?
Do you have SSL enabled for outgoing mail?
Does it work if you turn it off?
Do you have any proxies setup?
Does it work from a different account on the same mac?
Can you send mail with other accounts in that Mail App?
Do you see any errors in Console when you try to send email?

... and any other details of what works and what does not would be appreciated!

Yes it works fine in other mail application

Occasionally to any account. No rhyme or reason is obvious to this though.

No specific error message. Just it can't send the mail to x account. (if use SSL it doesnt like the plesk certificate but I don't use it)

The problem is only with Mail.app and it happens on more than one Mac (each running latest updates)

It causes me problems on Plesk and now with .mac.

the settings I use in mal.app are identical to those in Thunderbird which works consistently all the time to the same accounts.

resolution

I updated to OSX 10.4.5 and setup mail from scratch.

I now find sending mail is working correctly except if I allow Mail to be on when the powerbook goes to sleep mode. On reawakening mail does not get out the door. The solution is to close Mail and re open.

Hmm. Maybe this is a network issue and not something with Mail. Can you surf the web right after you wake the mac from sleep?

Are you using wireless?

waking mail

I am currently accessing via wlan but the addressing is static IP so the layer 3 is identical. and I don't appear to have this problem with SIP app's for instance.

It is a bit curious.
