Migrating from Cpanel to Plesk (Linux)

I have a Linux server and I want to migrate from Cpanel to Plesk.

My site is about 60GB in the .zip backup. What exactly is the procedure?

Ok I've read it. That doesn't answer my BASIC questions.
1)How safe it is to move from Cpanel to Plesk? I won't move from server to server. I will stay on the SAME server! So we will have to remove Cpanel and then install Plesk. Is this possible or I have to backup my whole site (60GB) in order for the change to proceed?
2)Does Plesk do this job?
3)How many hours of work is this/How many hours my site is going to be down?

To 1.) Sorry, there is no 100 % guarantee when you migrate from one software to another. Issues can be caused by all sorts of reason. But Parallels provides as well a frre migration support, if you experience issues, which you can't resolve by yourself:


Further to 1.) Yes, this is possible. It is always a good idea to have a complete backup, but your case should normally don't cause any issues, which might have the need of using it, when you migrate as described with your case.


To 2.) Yes.


To 3.) The process depends on your current software installations and environment, but you should be finished within 30 minutes, if you are an experienced system administrator. We don't know your linux knowledges and we don't know, how fast you get familiar with Plesk, its instructions and the usage. If you would like specific dosumentations, Parallels provides wide-ranged documentations, video tutorials and KB - articles and last but not least, you are able to use the forums for help, suggestions and work-arounds.
During the migration process, there should only be a few minutes of downtime for your current domains, because of a few service restarts.
 
1)Ok so to summarize, the issue is that my site files will stay in their place and that no "Backup/Restore" operation is required. Am I correct on this? Because 60GB site has very small files and if I need any Backup/Restore it's going to be a hard task.

2+3)You didn't get my question. I meant does Plesk have customer support technicials to handle this job? I don't have a web administrator and I don't have such a knowledge, sorry.

4)Also, is there any monthly fee when using Plesk?

This may not be very helpful to your specific situation but you might be better off with such a delicate migration by provisioning a new server, installing Plesk, and then migrating your project to the new server so that you can test it on a test URL before cutting over DNS and then decommissioning your old one. This approach will help to alleviate the pucker factor of a potentially messy situation if you're planning on running two control panels on the same box and would also help to control the process (avoiding downtime if you do it right, even during the DNS propagation period since some traffic would be served by the old server and some by the new). At one point or another both sites will need to use the same database unless you replicate them but that's just a matter of connection strings to avoid going the replication route.

Even a very experienced Pleskee can run into unforseen issues that are not inherently the fault of Plesk but rather combinations of factors that play into services or permissions going haywire.

As this is quite a unique project (running two competitor panels on the same box and migrating one to the other), it would be interesting to see your final process and results.

After you prepare your plan of action, it doesn't hurt to give an offering to the Parallels gods before you start.

there is absolutely no need for a 2. server, as suggested by @pleskpanel , because

a.) you already have a working environment, based on cpanel - configuration files for your webserver, ftp, database, eMail - server and what ever else you desired untill now on your server. These configuration files ( for example for apache or postfix ) won't be deleted, when you uninstall cpanel, nor does an uninstall process deletes vhosts, or eMail - folders. Just be sure, that your current environment meets the supported requirements ( http://download1.parallels.com/Ples...12.0-for-linux-installation-upgrade-info.html )
b.) Plesk "can" change the vhosts location, but there is no compulsion for it. You have the VERY OWN CHOICE to define the vhosts structure ( again, pls. see the documentation mentioned above - it will answer such questions )
c.) as you stay on the same server, as stated and just will remove cpanel and replace it with Plesk, you just could experience issues with Plesk itself.

To 1.) Yes! The content may stay where it is now - please read the documentation for it!

To 2. + 3.) Please.... click at least on the provided link


You will find some "Basic Requirements for Free Assistance" - and IF you meet the requirements, the word FREE, means FREE OF CHARGE. So YES, there are very well educated specialists at Parallels, which will then assist you, but be aware that ASSIST doesn't mean, that they will do all the work for you, while you are sitting on your sofa, drinking coffee. ^^
If you don't have any clue about the whole process and never did any migration, again: Please read the documents as provided - if you go through them, step - by step, there is no need to worry about issues/failures/problems, even if you might be a pessimist. :p

Apologies for the confusion - The comment wasn't necessarily intended to insinuate that there is an actual need for second server for this process however if you are deeply concerned about the potential for possible problems that could arise, it would be a cleaner, albeit more time consuming approach.

Nothing beats some hands-on support from Parallels as UFHH01 suggested, especially if you can get free migration assistance.
 
In addition to what was advised above (thanks guys!) I would recommend this: https://odin.com/products/plesk/how-to-migrate/#tab1, there is a form to submit in case you need assistnace with migration as it was previously mentioned. I need to note here, that we WILL do a migration for you (it's only possible through the link I've provided). As UFHH01 said above, in most cases it's possible to use your existing server however it will require some preps. Plesk installation requires a clean server, so after cPanel de-installation you will need to format it, meaning you will need to transfer your site backup somewhere else.
So please read the info here: https://odin.com/products/plesk/how-to-migrate/#tab1 and submit a request describing what you have currently, where you want to be and the process how you see it (use the same server). Our Migration Team will suggest a plan based on that, as for Plesk installation - I can't guarantee they will do it either, but it worth checking with the Team directly.
