Opening a FTP connection within Tomcat

Hi everybody,

I have deployed a web application on Tomcat 5.0.30 that uses jakarta's commons-net ftp client to establish a connection to an outside FTP server. The connection to the FTP server was made but when actual data transsmition occurs the ftp client fails without errors.
Naturally I supposed that there was something wrong with the code, but then I created a test standalone Java application that uses the same module and upon starting it on the server (w/o Tomcat) it worked fine.
Then I tried invoking the same standalone test application from within Tomcat and failed (miserably), which is very confusing since I use the same invocation on certain applications and scripts (FFMPEG, ImageMagick), and they work fine.
Next I tried running the test application through a Pearl script including Sudo for the actual java appl invocation.
Just this minute my colleague tells me that it finally worked.
And now the question:
Is there possibly an easier way to do a simple FTP upload from within a Tomcat 5.0.30 servlet hosted on CentOS4.2 that uses Plesk 8.1?
I can tell you now that all of the above !@#%!^% is not necessary on FC6, Tomcat 5.5 and NO Plesk (any version)

Unfortunately my colleague was wrong.
I still have a problem with ftp upload.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thank You
