plesk 12.5 apt-get upgrade

is it safe to update the system packages with following command on ubuntu 14.04.x ?

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

I found the document http://kb.odin.com/en/234 but am not sure it's applicable to version 12.5

P.S: if it's safe to upgrade, is there any way to enable auto security updates on ubuntu system?

we make every day a apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade
