Questions regarding custom plesk port and full backups

Regular Pleskian
Hey guys,

Have some very important questions regarding changing plesk ports and creating full backups.

1. When changing plesks port number, what exactly will it effect? Will it effect auto updates, etc.?

2. When creating a backup, I'd like to backup the entire server to rollback at anytime when changes are made to core files, is this possible?

3. With backups, somehow I'd like to schedule backups to possibly make nightly copies to an external hard drive on my computer for a fail safe method just in case the server happens to crash and I'd need to restore to another server/service. How would this be possible?

Please advise, thank you!

1. It depends on port that you want to change. Here you can find list of all ports used by Plesk - http://kb.odin.com/en/391
2. Almost each Plesk microupdate makes changes in Plesk core files. Do you really want described scenario? You can use some third-party backup software for making backup of whole server.
3. Look at location of local backups:

# cat /etc/psa/psa.conf | grep -i dump
DUMP_D /var/lib/psa/dumps

You can change it to directory located on your mounted external HDD.

Hi IgorG,

Thanks for reaching back :)

1. It depends on port that you want to change. Here you can find list of all ports used by Plesk - http://kb.odin.com/en/391

- Ok great, yes, it will be a completely different port from any of those. In that case, is it safe to say that changing the port will cause no harm?

- I see. Actually I realize this isn't needed. I will actually have to backup with another 3rd party software as you stated. Do you have any kind of friendly advice for that which includes an easy installation and GUI?

Also, in regards to full backup, If I did full linux backup and full restore onto a different ip address, how will I resolve the issue of changing the old plesk IP address that was used in the previous system and change to the new ip address so that Plesk can work properly?

3. Look at location of local backups:

# cat /etc/psa/psa.conf | grep -i dump
DUMP_D /var/lib/psa/dumps

You can change it to directory located on your mounted external HDD.

Thanks for the location. How can I retrieve a backup that is 5gb? These seem to be small files and there is no trace of a 5gb file. Also, the dump option to mounted external wouldn't work for me since I am using debian 7 x64 on a server. My scenario is I am trying create autobackups from plesk linux server to a local mac with an external hard drive attached. Any idea how to set that up?

Sorry for so many questions at once. Do not mean to overwhelm or confuse you. Please advise, thank Igor

I do not know your business case for port changing in Plesk. But we have some official examples in KB articles or Advanced Guide - http://download1.parallels.com/Ples...linux-advanced-administration-guide/68800.htm So, you can change any port as you want but on own risk. Consequences are unpredictable :)

Use KB search engine. For example - http://kb.odin.com/en/237 or http://kb.odin.com/en/943 , etc.

Hi IgorG,

Thanks for the prompt response. As far as the port change, it is only considered on our end to add an additional layer of security to prevent easy access due to default settings.

Everything else looks great. Thank you very much for this! :)
