Updates fail - separate SQL server

The autoupdate downloads the installation file, but it fails to complete the update. Attempts to manually run the installation of the update also fail.

This is the details of the error.

1: Cannot connect to the server. Please check your connection settings and verify that SQL server is in the correct state.
Error 1720. There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A script required for this installation to complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor. Custom action CheckDB script error -2147467259, Microsoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server: Login failed for user ''. The user is not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection. Line 1425, Column 6,

Basically, the SQL database is on another server and uses SQL logins, not Windows integrated authentication. For some reason the updates are all too stupid to use the application settings for the database. I cannot run the updates manually since the credentials on the one server are not valid on the other.

So far, the only way to do updates is to uninstall SiteBuilder, then do a reinstall of the full version in place. This is terribly time consuming (template packs installed).

Is there some other way to get around this problem?

I have the same problem trying to upgrade fromn 4.1 to 4.2 , had the same problem trying to upgrade from 4.0 to 4.1 also , had to reinstall to get around that .

THIS HAS TO BE FIXED < IF WE BUY A PRODUCT AND CANNOT UPGRADE < WE SHOULD GET A REFUND OR A NEW PROIDUCT !!!

Just to clarify your situation:
1. You installed Sitebuilder 4.0 or 4.1
2. You changed manually database connection string at application settings (config files)
3. You launch Sitebuilder upgrade to 4.2
Is this scenario correct?

If not, please provide step-by-step instructions what you did to isolate this issue.

Right Now

1. I have 4.1 running with a remote sql server.
2. Downloaded 4.1 to server ru7nning 4.1 ran the upgrade got the following errors .
3. I downloiaded the 4.2 windows upgrade and ran on server the got the error message below

A. from installatioin wizard ; " cannot connect to the server . please check your connection settings and verify the sql server is in the coirrect state.[

B. from sql serverf log files Login failed for user ''. The user is not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection. [CLIENT: 65.240.224.234]

it tried to connect to the right server , but used a bad user name

This same senairio happen when I tried to upgrade from 4.0 to 4.1 in January. So I gave up then and just reinstalled 4.1 on a new server and re installed all of my clients websites.

I cannot do this for every upgrade , allso if I try to run program repair it cannot sign on the remote sql server also .
But the sitebuilder application it self works fine .

To tell the truth it's not clear why you tried to upgrade your existing 4.1 installation (step 1) to the same version 4.1 (on step 2).
Also it's not clear how 4.1 was installed: initial remote SQL server with SQL authentication configuration or 4.1 appeared after upgrade.

To reproduce the issue I need step-by-step instructions. Can you help me?
Sitebuilder QA says that they always check Remote SQL connection configuration upgrade. It seems you have something else, I try to understand where we have difference.

I meant I downloaded the 4.2 upgrade . my 4.1 to 4.2 upgrade is what is failing now . My intial install has all ways been remote sql server no changes made .
This not a new problem it also happen in october with 4.0 trying to install templates please refefrence this ticket : [SWsoft #360236] 10/18/2007

In my case I did not manually changed the connection string. I used a separate SQL server with SQL login during the install.

The update installer does not use the connection string used by the application but instead tries to do Windows integrated login to the server -- and fails.

I didnot change the connection string !!, I made no changes the web.config or any other setting. I just selected remote sql server and the plain text based sql login during the intial install and everthing install and works fine for the sitebuilder appliucation, it is the upgrade application that some hows picks up a bad login name to connect to the remote sql server

Issue has been isolated and know developers fix this. I hope to get this fix in Sitebuilder 4.2.3.

Workaround: set sa password on the server to sa, upgrade and then set back to good password.

Check connection using osql (path may be different on your system).

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\80\Tools\Binn\OSQL.EXE" -U sa -P sa -S norad16.norad.com -d n30sitebuilder

Then also please check connection using WSB_SQLUSER and WSB_SQLPWD params from registry:

I did this on a worstation I have sql manager loaded,got login failed for user sa . also please note going thru the sql log when runnung the upgrade wizard shoiws the wizard getting this error"Login failed for user ''. The user is not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection."

Wizard shows "Login failed for user ''. The user is not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection." for Sitebuilder 4.0.0.244. Please use latest Sitebuilder 4.0 for installation: 4.0.0.303 (ftp://download1.parallels.com/SiteBuilder/Windows/4.0/sitebuilder-4.0.0_build071002.303_win.exe)

If you have already installed Sitebuilder - please uninstall it and then install 4.0.0.303 or Sitebuilder 4.2 using the same installation parameters.

I have 15 sites running on 4.1 just fine , its the 4.2 upgrade install app that is failing,
that is the wizard i am referring to. also the repair/unistall program cannot connect to the database also
