Hello, I have heard that the best way to upgrade to plesk 8 is to install plesk on another machine (7.5.4), migrate all of the current domains and users to that machine and then do a complete OS reinstall and install plesk 8 on the main machine, then migrate back.

The thing is, would I be able to use the same license on both machines for a short time to be able to migrate.

The other problem is that I am changing providers at the same time (which is the reason for the update) so the IPs are going to change. Will this bother the licence at all? I know the license is bound to an IP (so I have to get it changed by my license provider) but in the meantime will it still work?

Thanks in advance,
Tim

You will need to request a new license for 8.0 through the license webpage. There's a link on the download page I think. NOTE that once you request a new license, your 7.5 license will not auto-update when it reaches its expiration date. This will put it into "Grace" mode for a week before putting the server into limp/demo mode (one domain/one email limit).

The IP does not matter to the License AFAIK. I've run two servers with the same license on two IPs while testing/migrating. BUT, I got my licenses through SW-Soft. I don't know the limitations your datacenter/provider impose, you have to ask them for the final say.

You can just install 8 on your new server then use its Migration Manager to transfer your domains over from your 7.5 server. You only need to upgrade your 7.5 server if you want to dump everything to a backup then restore that backup on the new server. The MM is a better option, It worked fine for me going from 7.5 to 8.
