I have been looking for a way to setup a linux-ha setup for 2 Virtual Private Servers running Plesk 8.3.0. Getting heartbeat running has proven very difficult and probably impossible with the access I have. I wanted to ask if anyone has been successful in setting up a fail-over setup with this type of environment.

* Plesk 8.3.0
* Fedora Core 4 VPS x2
* I only have access to the Containers. No access to the Hardware Node.
* Apache 2
* PHP 5.0.4
* MySQL 5.0.24

Any guidance would be appreciated. Ill be sure to post back if I figure out how to do it myself.

I assume the VPS's are on 2 separate physical servers? Also I would recommend using a different OS that is not EOL'd. CentOS 5 would be a good alternative, as it supports clustering natively.

The VPS accounts are on the same Hardware Node. Changing the OS would not be an option, but I can possibly get Debian 4. I have no access to the Hardware Node and the Host is not willing to change the OS unless I upgrade which is not what I need right now. I have had the server for a long time now, so thats the reason its still running fc4.

As far as progress I have been able to get hartbeat running and keep it running. Now its just a matter of getting it to communicate with the other VPS account.

Yeah I realize that as well. This is for testing and development purposes. If I can get it working then I have reasons to justify purchase for a third and possibly more servers. Also helps me understand what a VPS can and can't do. Ive learned so much about *nix servers just from playing with Plesk, Virtuozzo, and OpenVz.

Update on heartbeat is that im learning that it hits the barrier on resources very quickly. This might not work after all. Might just be better off setting up with MySQL replication, and rsync.
