Is there a way to get number of emails in queue? (by PHP)

Hello, anyone knows a way to read (by php script) the number of emails in qmail queue?
// By this I want to make the server send less emails when queue is big.
Any help is appreciated.

use the following command

/var/qmail/bin/qmail-qstat

But that is a command line, can this be done by a PHP script?
