qmail-scanner problems, uninstallation

I installed qmail-scanner + clamav + spamassassin from ART and had some issues. I thought that I'd go ahead uninstall the ART packages since I was having some issues and it was in the middle of a work week when they arose, however I've got some serious problems now.

The system is very sluggish and what's worse is that some messages do not even appear to be arriving. So it would seem that qmail is not receiving certain messages while receiving others and other messages are taking very long periods of time to arrive. Very odd stuff.

Could someone please direct me as to what I should do in terms of what config files to change and what files to verify are correct after the de-install? I do have a backup that I could roll back, however I'd like to roll back chunks as it is a couple of days old and I do not want to cause any loss of data over the last couple of days.

Just to give some more information, I've force installed the psa-qmail rpm overtop of the old one, but things still seem a little sluggish. While top is running I'm seeing things like (the huge number of spamd processes worries me, should I be?):
