Unable to transfer plesk backup files via ftp to backup server

I have a Root Server I with 1and1 and whenever I try to transfer the full plesk backup file to the 1and1 backup server via ftp my server allways hangs at around 20% and I am completely unable to access my server via ssh, http, or any other methods. About 2 minutes later, I am able to access my server again but the uptime counter allways gets reset. Is my server rebooting?

I would really appreciate any and all help!

Also, my plesk backup file is around 970 MB.
