BIND need to run when using external NS?

New Pleskian
Hello,

in the past we used our server as a nameserver, too. But now we exclusively use external ns. Is there still a reason or an advantage to continue running BIND? Can we disable the local ns-serivce thats running on our server, without having any problems or disadvantage?

Thanks,
fluxx

Running a local caching nameserver makes DNS lookups a lot faster (set 'nameserver 127.0.0.1' in /etc/resolv.conf), which is especially nice for things like SpamAssassin which does a lot of them.

You can still use external nameservers for your authorative DNS if you don't want to use the nameserver on your Plesk server for that. Don't forget to disable DNS for your domains in Plesk or things will get weird as lookups for your domains on your server won't go to the external nameservers but to your local resolver, which probably won't have the correct records set up.
